Top Ten iTunes

The iTunes tracks I have played most in the last 7 months.

1. Paul Weller - You Do Something To Me
2. The Lightning Seeds - Marvellous
3. Skunk Anansie - Hedonism
4. The Lighening Seeds - What If...
5. Supergrass - Pumping on Your Stereo
6. Supergrass - Moving
7. Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body
8. Snow Patrol - Crazy in Love
9. Kelis - Trick Me
10. Sugababes - Killer

Not a great change from my last few charts, just Justin moving into the Top Ten. Although I have played plenty, as it is on random, the other 4200 tracks don't get to catch up!

Celeb BB rigged?

Channel 4 executives are strenuously denying accusations that Bez's victory was rigged by C4, as he is rumoured to be appearing in an Osborne-style Reality TV Show of his own.

A few more details are here.

24 Series 1 - Midnight to 4am

It is the day of the California Primaries and the Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) has had a tip off that presidential candidate Senator David Palmer is an assassination risk. Meanwhile top bloke Jack Bauer's (Keifer Sutherland) daughter Kim has gone missing with her friend. Whilst he is called in, his wife Teri and Kim's friend's dad drive around the streets trying to find her.

Jack is tipped off that there is a leak within CTU, the top bod who gives him a secure key card, is then murdered. The key card allegedly belongs to Nina Myers, a key member of the CTU team and the woman that Jack had a fling with whilst separated from his wife. When one of the team, Jamie, discovers that Nina's PC was compromised, she, Jack and Nina must work in confidence to try and find the leak, meanwhile a passenger jet coming from Europe is blown up over the Mojave desert.

We previously saw a woman called Mandy chatting up a photographer on the flight who is going to photograph Palmer, she steals his ID then parachutes out of the plane and blows it up. Yes really. We see her and her lover try and con her employer for more money before her girlfriend is shot, but she hands over this chap's ID which gets him into the Senator's inner circle.

Jack follows a lead to a street in LA, and with a uniformed cop in tow, tries to catch a guy in this anonymous building. The cop gets shot, but as the bad guy is taken away he says that he knows where Jack's daughter is but refuses to elaborate before being put into he back of the police van.

Meanwhile Kim and her friend have been kidnapped, they manage to escape, but her friend, Janet, is run over. The lads that kidnapped them, catch Kim but leave Janet in the road. They go back to check if she is alive and to kill her so that she cannot identify them. An ambulance arrives at the same time, so they leave and proceed to hand Kim over to another guy - the same one who had hired Mandy to get him the ID.

I like the fact that this is done in 'real time' (excluding advert breaks), the action is fast paced and there are many twists and turns, although you have to suspend your belief to a certain degree, it is very entertaining.

Oscars And Razzies

The Oscars were announced on Tuesday and The Aviator and Ray were popular films, with Jamie Foxx, the star of Ray playing blind musician Ray Charles nominated for best leading actor, as well as best supporting actor for his role in Collateral. Other nominees includes Leonardo Di Caprio as best leading actor for his role as Howard Hughes in The Aviator. Brits Clive Owen (Closer), Kate Winslett (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake) and Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) also received nominations.

A full list of the key categories can be found here.

Prior to the Oscars, The Razzies (Golden Raspberries) were announced. These are spoof awards for worst films and performances. Halle Berry is a popular choice after her role in Catwoman, along with brothers Shawn and Marlon Wayans who dressed in drag for their movie White Chicks.

The epic Alexander also got a few nominations, including that for its star Colin Farrell. Farrell has some stiff competition from president George Bush, nominated for his 'performance' in news footage featured in Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11.

More on the Razzies here.

Spiderman 2

Sequels can always be duds, but I think Spiderman 2 was a good one. This time Peter Parker/Spiderman (Tobey Maguire) is up against Dr Octopus (Doc Ock) (Alfred Molina) who is scientist Dr Otto Octavius after his experiment goes wrong.

In the story Peter gives up being Spiderman to woo is friend MJ (Kirsten Dunst), but he feels too guilty after talking to his Aunt May and goes back to it as MJ starts to come around. After MJ is kidnapped to lure Spiderman, we see some brilliant fight scenes on top of a moving train. The special effects are excellent and are supported by a good script which actually tells a story , plus decent character development making this one of the better sequels.

What's new at Swarovski

As I am a collector of Swarovski crystal pieces, I always look with interest to see what they have available.

New in Jewellery are Friendship necklace sets, with pair of hearts, jigsaw pieces and flowers.

Swarovsi have issued an exclusive Heart ornament for the year.

There are other heart ornaments such as the Box with Red Hearts and the Heart Flower.

Every three years, Swarovski issue a new trilogy exclusively for members of their Collector's society. The current Trilogy is Wonders of the Sea and the first peice, is called Harmony and is available in clear crystal and with coloured crystal. At £295 you need to be a dedicated collector! There are a few smaller exclusive pieces such as the minature starfish and the collector's box containing mini coloured crystals that complement the sea theme.

There have also been four other pieces released into the main collection along the sea theme, my favourite is the School of Fish.

Recently, I invested in their new Crystal Home Display which makes my modest collection look a bit better.

Poll decides Partners

Following on from the announcement that Hollywood golden couple Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston have split earlier this month, internet provider AOL conducted a poll to decide who should be the next celebrity partner for each of them. Apparently they think Jennifer is suited to Tom Cruise and Brad to Angelina Jolie (who was rumoured to have been involved with him before). Personally I think it is all a bit sick that they have been apart a matter of weeks and people are trying (although in jest) to pair them up.

Bez wins Celeb BB

Former Happy Mondays' dancer Bez was the surprise winner of Celeb BB last night. He beat Brigitte Neilson (3rd) and favourite Kenzie (2nd) for the title.

This was a shock to me as Kenzie was so popular, most people couldn't understand what Bez was saying.

Buddha Da - Anne Donovan

This book tells the story of Glaswegian Painter and Decorator, Jimmy McKenna, as he discovers Buddhism, and the impact this has on him and his immediate family as he becomes more and more committed. The story is told chronologically by the three characters of Jimmy, his wife Liz and daughter Anne Marie. Unlike other books written in this structure, you do not lose the thread of who is talking as you can clearly recognise each character in the writing.

The book is written as spoken Glaswegian, which means the first few pages take some getting used to. However at the end of this book, I didn't notice this anymore and it suits the book.

The story is simply told and well-written so that you tear through the book at a blistering pace. The characters are well rounded which helps you have an interest in what is happening to them. I thoroughly recommend it.

Celeb BB Double eviction

The BB producers kept the second eviction quiet, but Davina rushed through the show so quick it was obvious that there would be another one.

First one out was Caprice, who was delighted to be out after receiving only 5% of the public vote.

Next was Jeremy, who was also delighted to leave.

Remaining in the house are bookies' favourite Kenzie, with Bez and Bridget.

Hippo adopted by Tortoise

There have been various news reports of a baby hippo, named Owen, who was orphaned during tsunami related floods in Kenya. He has been sent to a game reserve in where he has befriended a Giant Tortoise who he follows everywhere. More here.

Celeb BB - Lisa Out

Naughty Big Brother was planning on evicting the housemate with the lowest number of votes, but the housemates were suspicious as they had not been asked to make nominations. BB then got them to make nominations even though they counted for nothing (Bez and Brigitte would have been up for eviction).

They then gave the housemates a Children's Party complete with costumes, where they all had to play party games. For Hide and Seek, Lisa was the seeker and had to wait in the Diary Room and count to 50 before coming out. However at the end, BB told her she was not going anywhere but out as she had been voted out by the public, only 3% had voted for her to stay. Lisa was thrilled at the idea, in spite of being evicted in her Little Bo Peep outfit. However, her housemates hid for a further 10-15 minutes before Jeremy got suspicious of the noises outside. It took them all a while to find 6 foot Brigitte under an egg-chair, and for a while they suspected she had gone as well.

Celeb BB Latest

John McCririck, the opinionated nose-picker (and eater), has been evicted from the Celebrity Big Brother house. He was equally outspoken in his interview with Davina, and still bitter about his lack of Diet Cokes.

He was up for nomination with Bez, who has been losing it the last few days, by ranting and refusing to participate in the tasks. Bez took being up for nomination quite badly.

John revealed he wanted Lisa to win as she called him the 'C' word.

Radio Aid

We have had Live Aid and Band Aid, now it is Radio Aid, this time to raise money for the tsunami relief effort. They are asking people to donate an hour's salary, as well as offering exclusive auctions. More info here.

Jackie Stallone is evicted from CBB

Jackie Stallone became the first housemate evicted from Celebrity Big Brother house. She is no great loss as she did nothing whilst in the house, except wear her pyjamas and complain.

Protesters Storm BB House

The Fathers for Justice protest group tried to break into the BB house last night. They usually dress in superhero outfits, but there are conflicting reports as to whether they were wearing them or carrying them last night. The protesters meant no harm, this was purely a publicity stunt - they took in drink, chocolate and Diet Coke (especially for John - who was denied his rights to Diet Cola after failing a task). More details here.

Up for nomination are Jackie and John.

iPod Shuffle

Apple have announced the arrival of the iPod shuffle, the smallest iPod yet. It comes in 512mb or 1mb and starts at £69. It can be plugged directly into any USB port on your computer, to transfer your tracks. It either plays them in order or you can shuffle them. There is no fancy screen, just a couple of simple controls.

Dead Stylish - Lisa Armstrong

This book took me absolutely ages to read. Sure, it is quite thick at over 500 pages, but it is also quite tedious!

I was hoping it would turn out to have more to offer than the chick-lit genre, but it is just a long, slow chick-lit novel. The characters are OK, a bit too extreme to be believable. My main bugbear was how the book chops and changes from one character to another, especially at the beginning when you haven't worked out which sister is which, let alone the rest of the characters. The characters are so interlinked that the book is almost incestuous.

Overall, my verdict is that this book is disappointing, and offers nothing different to any other contemporary women's fiction.

Essexgirl's Roman Adventures Part Two

It was a late start on New Year's Day. Our original plan to get a bus tour was thwarted by the huge queue and the fact that the ticket office refused to sell anymore tickets as it was too busy.

We got the tube back to the Palazzo del Popolo, via the posh shops of Via Conduitti. There were loads of people out on the street and there was quite a nice atmosphere. We then walked back to the Spanish Steps which was crowded with people, then down to the river and along the angel-clad Pont Sant Angelo, by Castel Sant Angelo, which was also closed.

We started to get hungry at this point but struggled to find anywhere open, let alone anywhere with room. After wandering for ages we ended up having a take-away pizza in some remote side street. It was a bruschetta type, with fresh tomatoes, basil and mozzarella and was delicious. We then continued our meanderings through various squares/piazzas. We went to Piazza Navona, it was heaving as there was fair and market going on, so we left hastily and went to see the Pantheon, one very old church (also closed), before wandering back, via Area Sacra Di Largo Argentina which are ruins, where it is rumoured that, Julius Caesar was slain. Now it is a cat sanctuary for numerous stray cats.

That evening, we found a little locals restaurant for dinner. This was the first place where they had not had an English menu, so our weak language skills were put to the test! I had an OK asparagus risotto. Then we all went to find some interesting bars that were featured in our guide books. It was quite a trendy and expensive area around Piazza del Fico and Piazza Navona. We went to Jonathan's Angels first which was a very quirky place, with unusual decor. There was no room inside so we had to sit outside. My guidebook recommended the toilets, saying they were interesting. The big bath was quite interesting, the piss stinking squat toilet wasn't. Next was Bar Del Fico, which was quite nice, but expensive. Cocktails were only 1 euro more than a regular short. We then decided to go to a nearby Irish bar. I don't remember the name, anymore than I remember leaving, or the Fiat Multipla taxi home at 4am.

It was another late start for us and we went to The Colosseum. We queued for the obligatory 20 mins and paid our €10 each to get in. But that was it. Tours, audio guides and books were an extra €7 or 8 between us, on top of our admission. It was a bit of a con, and as a result the building (which is spectacular from the outside) was quite dull inside as there was no information. We walked through the vast Roman Forum after which was free and is the remaining central part of Ancient Rome. We went to see if the Pantheon was open this time, and as it was busy again thought we were being clever as it was near a McDonalds! The McD's was packed to the gills and in fact I think they had run out of food as no one came back through the crowd in the ten minutes we stood in the queue. We ended up with greasy take away pizza for lunch. The Pantheon was open. It too, was crowded, and part covered in scaffolding where they were re-doing the ceiling inside. Still quite impressive for something over 1850 years old.

That night for dinner we explored Trastevere (or transvestite as we nick-named it). It is a nice, local, area with bars and restaurants. We found a couple of nice places and I had my first pasta dish of the holiday. Still, we noted, they can't bring everyone's food to the table at the same time! This was not too much of a late night either. After the last two and we made our way back to the hotel about midnight.

After checking out of the hotel, we had a quick walk about before catching our flight home and got in at about 5.45pm.

Celeb BB Paychecks

According to Digital Spy/Daily Star these are the amounts each celeb is being paid to be in CBB3:

1. Brigitte Nielsen: £160,000
2. Caprice: £110,000
3. Germaine Greer: £50,000
4. Jeremy Edwards: £40,000
4. John McCririck: £40,000
6. Bez: £30,000
6. Lisa I'Anson: £30,000
8. Kenzie: £25,000

Celeb BB Update

Well the housemates have settled in and were getting along fine. Note the use of the word 'were'.

We have seen John pick his nose and eat it. We have seen John in his underpants. A nation vomits on both counts.

We have heard Lisa's loud, bossy and dull voice.

We have heard Kenzie plonk himself in the Diary Room chair and ask "What's up Bruv?" To Big Brother. Class.

All was going well til the first task. They had to win their shopping by going on a roundabout spun by John, then wading through all sorts of muck. They didn't win it all and John was exhausted. He was fine until he found out there would be no milk (later exchanged for broad beans) or Diet Coke for him to drink and proceeded to stage a one-man silent protest and refused to get involved in anything.

Later that night, Kenzie, on Big Brother's instructions shut the bedroom door. John ranted at him for not standing up and called him 'weak' which served to aggravate the younger (and slightly pissed) man.

Essexgirl's Roman Adventures Part One

Better late than never...

We (seven of us) flew to Rome on 30th December on an early morning flight from Stansted. We checked into our rather basic hotel - Domus Mea - and went for a walk to try and find a late lunch and a drink. We ended up near the Trevi Fountain. It was packed with tourists and this was our first indication of how busy Rome was at this time of year. After a cheap lunch with expensive drinks, we split up for a wander. Ratboy and I just looked at a few shops and I bought a couple of cardigans in Blu Sand. We then walked back and relaxed in the room before heading out for a meal. We met up with two others who had flown out separately and wandered around to a local restaurant. I had stuffed aubergines which were delicious, served with roasted potatoes swimming in olive oil, although none of the meals appeared to arrive together. After this we ended up in an Irish bar before heading home about 1am.

The next day Ratboy and I headed off to the Vatican and after some aimless wanderings we joined the growing queue to get into St Peters Cathedral. In actual fact it only took 20 mins to get through the security and we enjoyed our viewing of the Cathedral which was preparing for a service by the pope later that evening, although you could not get up to the dome at that time. After the cathedral we went round to the Vatican museums, of which there are twelve or so, and you pay €12 to get in. Some museums are small, but most are interesting including the art gallery, the map room, the rooms painted by Raphael and or course, the Sistine Chapel.

We returned to the hotel to relax again before heading out to see what Rome had to offer for New Year's Eve. For a meal the nine of us went for a Chinese then to Piazza di Popolo where they played some odd music and some stuff on a big screen whilst a Peter Pan type story was re-enacted on high wire. It went on for an hour and a half before seeming to start again, until midnight. Loads of people let champagne off and we were absolutely drenched, I then had to fight through the crowds to the loo. Many people tried to leave the square at the same time as us and it got a bit hairy as Ratboy ended up hanging on to me and my other small friend G, when we all got separated in the crush of crowds. We met up with the others Ok and went to a little bar for a drink where I had hic-coughs. We left there about 4am.

Steve gets No. 1

Bit of late news: X-Factor winner Steve Brookstein knocked Band Aid 20 off of the top spot to take Number One with his debut single Against All Odds. He is donating the proceeds to the tsunami disaster appeal.

King Arthur

I watched this film on DVD, and had heard that it was pretty poor. With a cast of class Brits including Ray Winstone, Ioan Gruffeld and Clive Owen, I really wanted to like it. The best I can say is that it was OK.

In this telling of the famous legend, Arthur was a half Roman, half British leader who was serving Rome, with his Sarmatian knights in Britain by guarding Hadrian's Wall. There has been a lot of criticism to historical inaccuracies in this story - that the Saxon's invaded via Scotland and over the wall and after getting their backsides kicked, buggered off home again. It appears to be a gratuitous excuse for lots of sword fights and charging around on horses. And getting Keira Knightley to film a battle scene is a skimpy leather number.

You have to feel a bit sorry for all the male leads who are worthier of much more. Ray Winstone seemed to be the character with the token one liners, Clive Owen was the brooding hero and Ioan Gruffeld an extra brooding hero in case Clive Owen wasn't your cup of tea. Keira Knightley was the token bit of stuff in flimsy outfits in the middle of winter.

Verdict: Could do better.

Scissor Sisters get best selling album of 2004

Apparently, in a close race, the Scissor Sisters pipped Keane to the top spot for the best selling album of 2004.

Happy New Year

Like many, I have been moved by the continued coverage of the tragedy, and the bravery and generosity of some people since the earthquake and tsunami in SE Asia.

Here are a few articles I have found interesting on the web:

Gordon Brown is leading the way for the G8 members to freeze debts owed by affected nations.

There have been some very generous donations from governmets and citizens combined, including money from Mozambique one of the poorest countries in the world.

Thailand in particular is postive that tourists will return soon.
