The SE Asian Tsumnai Disaster

Like most people who have been following the news over the last few days, I have been shocked by the pictures, reports and statistics that have come out following the waves caused by the earthquake off of Sumatra.

At the time of writing the death toll is 100,000. This is without the disease that is likely spread as the fresh water supply is contaminated with raw sewage, and the bodies left rotting in the heat. Their hospitals are over-stretched and we can sit at home and watch it on the news. If you feel you would like to make a donation to help, then The Red Cross is asking for donations on-line. Oxfam also has a similar appeal.

Strictly Ice Dancing

After the success of the ballroom dancing show, Bruce and Tess were back to present a one off ice dance Christmas Special. There were three judges with ice dancing backgrounds plus Craig Revel-Horwood from the original dance series.

First celeb up was TV presenter Carol Smilie, who with her partner, professional Oula Jaaskelanian, performed a routine to Queen's Ain't No Stopping Us Now. It was quite good, although Carol seemed a bit timid on the ice (not that I can skate let alone dance on the ice). Judges gave them 21 points, which was quite harsh.

Next up was Hollyoaks actor Marcus Patric with professional Leigh Mack. I had no idea who he was. Their routine was weak and he struggled in having to lift her and not fall over. They received 12 points. This contest would always be tough on the male celebs, for just this reason.

Third on the dance floor was Jessica Taylor from Liberty X with Robert Burgerman. They danced to Beyonce's Naughty Girl and she was very confident on the ice, and moved well. It was obvious she had skated before this competition. They received 34 out of a possible 40 points from the judges.

Next up was comedian Rowland Rivron with an over-confident and quite arrogant professional Charlotte Clements. The routine was quite slow, as Rowland had no experience before the show (all competitors had three to four weeks training), and he was also struggling with the lifts. They received the lowest score of 10.

EastEnders actress Scarlett Johnson was next, with her partner Daniel Whiston. They performed a very good routine, she was confident on the ice and moved and danced well. The judges were quite harsh in scoring them only 22 points.

Originally footballer Paul Gasgoine was going to enter but he had injured his back in a series of falls. His fellow international David Seaman stepped into the breach. Fortunately he had skated quite a bit as a teenager so he was a bit more capable when he took to the ice with eight days remaining until the competition. He was 6'4" and was partnered by the petite Zoia Birmingham. In spite of his height which he sometimes seemed awkward with he skated well and with confidence, handled the lifts and moved his hips well for the routine to Tom Jones' Kiss. They scored 33 points putting them second.

As with the dance shows, the viewers have the deciding vote. This was not a live show, so only the audience in the arena voted. After the viewer scores were added, it was David and Zoia who were crowned Strictly Ice Dancing champions.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

I am not around much until after the New Year, so Christmas posting will be sporadic.

Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special

The idea of the Christmas Specials was to get the top three couples from both series to perform their best/favourite dance to a Christmas track. As Christopher Parker, the runner up of Series One was ill (alleged suicide attempt), Martin Offiah, stepped in. Julian Clary was in panto, so Aled took his place.

It was Martin, and his Series One partner Erin who went up first and performed a jive to All I Want for Christmas is You, it was a lively jive, I am always impressed by how light on his feet a stocky man like Martin is. Although their jive was not a patch on anything Jill and Darren did in Series two, it was a good amateur dance. Erin had a fabulous skimpy costume and they danced well together.

Aled and Lilia samba'd to Aled's hit Walking in The Air, which was sung by a guest choirboy and given a samba beat. They did it very well, even if the music was a bit odd!

Lesley Garrett returned with Anton and they did a beautiful waltz to Silent Night.

Denise and Ian performed their marvelous quickstep, one of my favourite ballroom routines. Their tune was Sleigh Ride.

Last Series champions, Natasha Kaplinsky and Brendan Cole did a Foxtrot to Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. I am not a fan of the Foxtrot and no amount of judges' enthusiasm for their 'control' won me over.

Jill and Darren performed a new jive routine with rock 'n' roll lifts (technically illegal, but many couples used illegal lifts) to Rocking Around the Christmas Tree, it was very good, but ultimately they came second in the judges' votes to Denise and Ian.

Natasha was third, Lesley fourth, Aled fifth and Martin brought up the rear.

As I am a muppet I forgot to video the last part of the show with added on the viewers' votes to decide the ultimate winner, which was Jill and Darren. Interestingly Jill has now accepted a lead role in the West End musical Chicago.

Bestselling Books

Interstingly enough, at the time of writing, the book topping Amazon's bestseller list for the last 24 hours in the new Harry Potter book - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

The most interesting bit of all is that the book is not due to be released until 16th July, and this was only announced yesterday, yet people are ordering it already. Bizarre.

Personally I will be waiting for the paperback!

Kermit gets his career back

Apparently, Disney, who own The Muppets, are to relaunch Kermit & Co and make them as big as Mickey Mouse and Winnie-the-Pooh.

I was a big fan of the Muppets as a child, so will always have a soft spot for them and hope they do make a come back. Mickey and Winnie are more iconic images, so this is a big challenge.

Dogville

This is a very unusual film, and sadly, also a rather dull one.

The premise is that Grace (Nicole Kidman) is on the run from gangsters and the small town of Dogville agrees to hide her, and in turn she does work for them.

The cinamatography is (intentionally) choppy and uncomfortable. There is no real scenery, as the film is made in a black studio with the houses marked out on the floor, and a few key pieces of furniture in them. There are no walls, and the cast mime going through doors, with sound effects. You can see the people in the other houses going about their business. This takes some getting used to but is fine after a while.

The film is narrated by John Hurt, and tells how Grace goes from welcome helper to victim of abuse as the town is to scared to admit they are hiding her, but now need her. However the telling of the story is slow and frustrating.

Eventually, the reason why Grace is hiding is revealed, and the film reaches its dramatic and horrific climax, but this does not make up for the dullness of the film, which I had to watch in two parts as I almost fell asleep twice.

The cast is supurb with Paul Bettany, Lauren Bacall and Chloe Sevigny in supporting roles. But that is the best thing about it. Disappointing.

Band Aid 20 is Xmas No. 1

Band Aid 20, with the new version, of Do They Know It's Christmas? has retained the number one spot for three weeks, to offically be classified as the Christmas Number One. Something that has always been rather prestigious for a single, not least because this is the biggest week for sales in the year.

It is also likely to be the year's biggest selling single.

New Apple signature iPods

Quite liking this spoof on Apple's U2 signature iPod.

Top Ten calendars of the Year

Bit early for this, as I am quite sure most people haven't finished their Christmas shopping. Besides, as it is from only one calendar company it is hardly representative, but I thought it quite an interesting snippet of pop culture info.

Top Ten calendars of 2004
  1. Kylie Minogue
  2. Robbie Williams
  3. Manchester United
  4. Busted
  5. David Beckham
  6. The Simpsons
  7. Arsenal (hmmph)
  8. Sir Cliff Richard
  9. Hollyoaks Girls
  10. McFly

Top Six calendars featuring women

  1. Kylie Minogue
  2. Hollyoaks girls
  3. Britney Spears
  4. Christina Aguilera
  5. Rachel Stevens
  6. Kelly Brook

Top Ten calendars featuring men

  1. Robbie Williams
  2. David Beckham
  3. Sir Cliff Richard
  4. Elvis Presley
  5. Jonny Wilkinson
  6. Justin Timberlake
  7. Eminem
  8. Peter Kay
  9. Will Young
  10. Colin Farrell.

There are a lot of calendar purchasers by the younger generation, mainly of pop stars. However footie teams can gross age and gender, whilst Sir Cliff Richard is pretty much exclusively for the older female clientele. Elvis is an interesting one, he is less likely to be purchased by fans who have a crush on him, but could be purchased by men or women who were fans of his music or just of that era.

X Factor: G4 Update

Apparently X Factor runners up, G4, have signed a record deal that is worth more than winner Steve Brookstein's. Due to the show's contract they are not allowed to release a single within three months of Steve, but in between they have the X Factor tour and a chance to record some tracks ready for when the restriction is up.

Very little extra info is available here.

Mystic River

I have just watched this on DVD from Love Film and it was fabulous! It is written and produced by Clint Eastwood, who seems to have established himself as a director of some quality films. The lead actors - Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon and Tim Robbins - make up a dream cast as three old school friends tied by the memory of Dave's (Tim Robbins) abduction as a child. Although he escaped, the mental scarring is visible and the friendships drifted apart in adulthood. Then one day Jimmy's (Sean Penn) daughter is found dead, this is the same night that Dave come home to his wife covered in blood after attacking a mugger. Police officer Sean (Kevin Bacon) is investigating, this is hampered by a local unofficial investigation in this Irish community.

There is no clear perpetrator in this murder film, and the character's and their relationships is as integral (if not more so) to the film that discovering the murderer.

With a supporting cast of Laurence Fishburne, Marcia Gay Harden and Laura Linney, the combination of quality Oscar winning acting, a tight script and superb direction means that this film will become a classic.

Strictly Come Dancing Final

There were quite a few dances for the three finalists to perform tonight. Fist they had to do their favourite ballroom routine. Denise and Ian kicked off with a fabulous Quickstep which earned them the first two 'ten' marks of the series from the judges. Jill and Darren performed a Foxtrot. The judges observed that it was a harder dance than the quickstep, and although executed well, scored them slightly less than Denise & Ian. Julian and Erin got disappointing scores for their Quickstep in comparison, but still their best marks of the series. Although they are the underdogs of the final, I thought their ballroom routine was very good and enjoyable to watch nonetheless.

Like the X Factor final we had a few montages of all the dancing contestants rehearsing and performing. For their Latin routine, Denise and Ian performed their samba which had been such a hit for them a few weeks ago. Due to a slippery floor, Denise was inhibited somewhat and seemed to lose her footing for a couple of steps but regained them admirably. Jill and Darren's Jive was always a popular routine and they scored 10/10 from all four judges. Julian and Erin struggled with the samba, and got a low score. Julian has always been slightly awkward with the masculine and passionate Latin dances.

The final judges score put Jill in first, Denise second and Julian third and it was up to the public now. Also in the first show we saw mini-routines form all the eliminated contestants.

In the second show the three finalist competed together in the Viennese Waltz. The judges commented, but did not score, however all praised Denise and Jill.

At this point it was revealed who was in third place and this was Julian and Erin. This was no real surprise to anyone, least of all them, as they were the weakest couple left in the competition and both Jill and Denise had evolved into proper dancers. The left by performing their freestyle routine, a kind of Top Gun/Officer and a Gentleman pastiche.

Denise and Ian performed a lively routine which took little steps from all the dances they had performed, as well as a few lifts, which would not be easy as Denise is very tall, and as an athlete, quite muscular (although still slim). Jill and Darren also performed a very good routine. Both got glowing reviews from the judges, who did not score them.

After a final routine from Bruce Forsythe accompanied by the eliminated contestants, the winners were announced to be Jill and Darren. The were a very good couple and deserving winners.

The X Factor Final

There has been a lot of judge back-biting going on in the press in the run up to this final featuring Steve, from Simon Cowell's camp and G4 from Louis' team.

Having won the toss, Louis chose Steve to go on first and he went on and sang his personal choice of Higher and Higher, the Jackie Wilson song. It was a very good version and he was joined by a choir. G4 performed the operatic classic, Nessum Dorma, which was a risky move, but it is a well known tune and the audience seemed to enjoy it.

In between musical numbers this week, there were lots of montages of the finalists' best bits as well as footage on the other contestants and the judges' most memorable auditions (won by a chicken plucker, who came on to sing Tragedy).

For their second numbers, the acts' respective mentors chose the songs they felt their act performed best. Simon chose Smile for Steve, which he did well again, and Louis chose Bohemian Rhapsody, which had been so popular for G4 the previous week, and which they again did well.

Milking the show for all it is worth we saw messages for the acts' families and friends before eventually seeing them perform their last songs. Steve did Phil Collins' Against All Odds, a song I really like, but Steve found a bit emotional, and struggled with at the end. Sharon laid into him and called him 'fake' and claiming she didn't like his 'Mr Humble' act and 'victim' role. Steve looked mystified. It was obvious that Sharon did not like Steve. Simon just stated that it was not fair to get personal at this stage of the competition. G4 did a cover of Radiohead's Creep which was fantastic. The judges comments were less het up this time.

For the second show we saw more summaries of the first show and reviews of the series. Eventually the winner was announced: Steve. He was delighted and struggled to sing again as he seemed to be half singing, half laughing.

In the paper this morning, Sharon reckoned that she had contributed to his victory, unintentionally, as people didn't like her comments and thus voted for Steve. It seemed to me that Sharon had a problem with Steve, and went about it all the wrong way. It was a shame to tarnish the final like that.

Fun quiz to tell if you recognise porn star names compared to My Little Pony names.

I got 4 out of 10, but then I never had a MLP, nor did I ever want one. Creepy things.

Tart Noir

I expected a book made up of a collection of femme fatale crime stories to be more murder based, but there were some odd crimes featured! The stories are all very different, some with a comedic edge, some are darker. Generally I enjoyed the book, thought there are some stories that were a bit odd. The advantage of this book is that the stories are all quite short, there are very few that are more than twenty pages (in fact, a lot are less), so you are not stuck trying to finish a long, drawn out tale, which keeps the book flying.

I'm A Celeb Final

Usual length show, but mainly showed 'best bits' and comments. The three finalists had to each compete for a course in a pre-cooked dinner. Fran had to have a perspex box over his head which gradually filled with water, eels and spiders. Paul had an eating trail, he ate everything including 'bush oysters' aka the famous kangaroo testicles. He made quite a bit of fuss and whimpered a lot, but at least he ate them. Joe had to lay in an underground box for five minutes with a few rats. All three got full marks to earn their fish and chip suppers.

It was Fran who came third. When the Ant & Dec went back to announce the winner Paul got all emotional feeling he was accepted or something. Anyway Joe won and he was the more deserving winner, as well as being bookies' favourite throughout.

I'm A Celeb..Day Fourteen and Fifteen

Didn't watch Saturday's effort, went out and forgot to tape it (But remembered X factor and Strictly at least). No one was evicted and I gather Paul squealed a lot in his trial which involved sticking his hand in boxes.

Tonight, Paul and Fran had an argument over who got to be Spiderman and rescue the chest. The Trial was excellent and was similar to last year's Hell Hill where all the remaining celebs had to climb up a muddy hillside whilst water cannons, balls, feathers and other stuff were fired down at them. At one point they all slid down the bottom. Apparently Janet lost her star and took Paul's. He made sure everyone was aware and used it as an excuse not to climb back up the hill. It was a very funny trial to watch.

The bottom two in the voting was Janet and Fran and surprisingly it was Janet to go. I have no idea who votes for Fran.

The X Factor: Semi Final

So, down to three acts each performing two songs. Tabby kicked off with Pride (In the name of Love) which went down well. Steve then sang Have I Told You Lately which was very good and G4 bizarrely sang O Holy Night. I did not like G4's offering at all.

Second songs were Sailing complete with pipe band, by Tabby; Greatest Love of All by Steve and a fantastic Bohemian Rhapsody by G4.

As usual the show was milked for all that they can, with re-caps and second offerings going on all through. They suck people in with the audition show, and then people don't like to give up on it. I taped the show and ended up fast-forwarding most of it. Anyway, it was tabby that went in a tight vote, leaving Steve and G4 in the final.

Strictly Come Dancing: Semi Final

Once again, the couples had to perform a ballroom dance and a Latin one. Aled and Lila kicked off with their Tango and got quite disappointing marks, although their comments were good. I thought it was an excellent tango. Julian and Erin then performed their Foxtrot. I thought the chosen piece of music, Peggy Lee's version of Fever. It was a very slow piece and made the dance slow and dragging.

Jill then performed her tango with her partner Darren. It was quite stilted and she didn't look in control of the dance. The judges also noticed this and commented and marked accordingly, giving them their lowest score in the competition. However, they loved Denise and Ian's tango, putting them in the lead, in spite of commenting on Denise needing to work on her spine movement.

At the halfway point, Denise was 1st, Jill 2nd. Aled was third and Julian last.

In the Latin section, the judges liked Aled and Lilia's Paso Doble and gave them reasonable marks. Julian and Erin struggled with their jive. Julian looked awkward and out of time. They got a very low score and poor comments from the judges.

By contrast Jill and Darren got the series' first 10 for their Paso. Jill looked fab and there was not a step out of place. Denise and Ian's Paso was also raved about, although they scored a point of two lower than Jill and Darren, their higher Tango scores meant that they kept 1st position, and the judges were pleased to see that Denise was using her spine correctly.

After the judges scores were totaled, the positions stayed the same as the half way point. With viewers' votes, it meant that Denise and Aled were at the bottom as the public voted to keep Julian in, who was rather embarrassed and kept saying "It is not right!". Eventually it was Aled who went. It is a shame as all couples are at a very good standard at the moment, however Julian was weakest on the night.

iTunes price Problem

Apple are being criticised that the prices charged on UK iTunes is higher than that in other parts of Europe. A lot of things are more expensive in the UK than Europe, not that it makes it right. However, a lot of other companies such as HMV, offer a subscription service, but a straight music purchase (comparable with iTunes) is 99p compared to iTunes 79p.

If Apple lower their UK prices, that will force all the others too hopefully. Maybe the other sites will allow you to download tracks that are compatible with an iPod too....I can live in hope.

I'm A Celeb...Day Thirteen

The trial today was fun, Janet and Sophie had to 'park' colour coded camels into the relevant spaces. They got three out of five.

For the chest, Fran and Joe had to clamber under and over trip wires to reach the chest. They did it with one 'life' to spare, got it back to camp and got the question wrong.

There is little conflict in the camp these days. Janet gets cross at interfering in the cooking, and a bit at Sophie's laziness, but that is it.

At the end of voting tonight, Sophie and Paul were in the bottom two, and it was Sophie who went.

I'm A Celeb - Day Eleven and Twelve

Yes, I know, two in one, I do have a life sometimes you know?

Day Eleven's Trial: Huggy getting loads of bugs dropped on his head. And a celebrity in his ear. You had to be there. It was Sheila who went and she made it quite clear that she does not like Sophie.

Day Twelve: Fran did natalie's old Slither River trial, he only got three stars as it was quite hard work to get the bouy's untwisted round the coils, and then a smake wrapped itself around one, whilst he was trying to undo it. Huggy got evicted and was a bit emotional.
